Kyoto Kumihimo

The original use of Kyoto Kumihimo was in the production of Buddhist and Shinto ritual implements and items for the nobility and imperial household during the Heian period (794-1185). Since then, it has come into common use among samurai and was used on armor and swords as a way to identify individuals in case they fell in battle or lost their tools. Because of the unique way they were made and the variety of cords that could be used, they gradually developed into fashion accessories.
