Marking and Layout Tools

For square lines, press a Japanese carpenter's square (sashigane) firmly against the wood and draw along it. On end grain and edges, a marking gauge (kebiki) or scribing gauge gives you a finer, more accurate line.
For the 45-degree lines a miter joint needs, use a carpenter's square or a miter square. When you lay out a dovetail, aim for a slope of 70 to 75 degrees, and mark it with a carpenter's square or a protractor so the angle is exact.

- Allow for the material the saw and chisel will remove when you decide where the line goes.
- Make the corners meet at a clear, exact point rather than a vague intersection.
- Carry your lines around onto the sides and the back. Marking every face means you can check your cut from any angle.
- Mark which part you are cutting away and which you are keeping. It is an easy way to avoid cutting on the wrong side of the line.
Tips for Sawing
- Set the blade on the waste side of the line, and cut so the marking line is still there when you finish.
- Line up your eye and the saw blade with the marks on both the top face and the side, and keep checking both as you cut.
- When the piece is lying flat you cannot see the far side, so cut partway from one side, then turn the piece over and cut from the other, alternating between the two and checking the marking lines on both faces as you go.
- Clamp the workpiece down. With the wood held steady you can put all of your attention on the cut, and accuracy follows.
- For angled cuts such as dovetail sockets, clamp the piece so the sloped line stands vertical. You can then saw straight down instead of tilting the saw, which is much easier to do accurately.

Tips for Chiseling and Finishing
- Start about 2 mm inside your line, then pare back to the line at the end.
- Take shallow cuts. Work in small, patient passes rather than digging deep in one go.
- Forcing the chisel or striking too hard leads to chipped edges and overcuts.
- For a through cut, work from both faces and let the two openings meet in the middle. Chiseling from both sides keeps your marking lines in view the whole time.
- For the final paring cut, line a squarely cut offcut up with one edge of your marking line and clamp it in place as a simple jig. Run the flat back of the chisel against it for a clean, accurate finish.

How to Make Four Common Joints

- Start with the tail board. Saw down along your lines, keeping the blade at the dovetail angle.
- Cut away the waste, taking care not to go past the corner where the lines meet.
- Move to the pin board. Line up your eye and the saw with the dovetail angle, then saw down at both ends of the section you will remove.
- Clamp the piece down. Hold the chisel vertically against the waste and tap it in with a hammer to score the line. Note: work from the wider side of the dovetail so the chisel does not catch as it breaks through.
- Lay the chisel flat and pare the waste away a little at a time.
- Set the chisel into the corner and cut in at the dovetail angle.
- Repeat steps 6 and 7, working your way down.
- Once you are about halfway through the thickness, turn the piece over and work from the other side until the two cuts meet.
- Test-fit the tail board and the pin board together, then pare to your marking lines with a chisel until the two seat cleanly.
Cutting a Mortise
- Mark your layout lines on the piece.
- Clamp it down. Hold the chisel vertically just inside each of the four corners and tap it in with a hammer to score the line.
- Drive the chisel in vertically at the center with a firm blow.
- Tilt the chisel and work outward from the center toward the corners.
- Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you are about halfway through the thickness, then turn the piece over and work from the other side until the mortise goes through.
- Finish by paring to the line with a chisel.
